Svalbard · Northern Norway
Longyearbyen began as a coal-mining settlement and later became the administrative, research and tourism centre of Svalbard. Norwegian sovereignty is governed by the Svalbard Treaty.
Restaurants use reindeer, seal where legally sourced, Arctic fish and preserved ingredients, while the remote town has developed a surprisingly international dining scene.
During the polar night, aurora can appear even around midday. Visitors must not leave settlements without proper polar-bear safety and an experienced guide.
