Lofoten has depended on the seasonal cod fishery for more than a thousand years. Stockfish trade connected its small communities with European markets and shaped the rorbuer, harbours and coastal culture seen today.
Local food culture
Stockfish is the signature ingredient. Also try fresh cod, halibut, fish soup, dried fish snacks, local lamb and cinnamon buns in village cafés.
Aurora advice
The open northern horizon and low light pollution are excellent, but clouds can gather around the mountains. Check several islands and both sides of the archipelago.
