Kirkenes · Northern Norway
Kirkenes expanded through iron-ore mining and endured heavy destruction during the Second World War. Its location near Finland and Russia gives the town a distinctive border identity.
King crab is the best-known speciality. Also try reindeer, Arctic fish, berries and dishes influenced by Norwegian, Sámi and neighbouring cultures.
From late August into April, dark inland areas around Pasvik and the fjords offer broad skies. Winter temperatures may be severe.
